MARTON NOTES

SOLDIERS ON LEAVE MAJOR ROGER CAMERON ENTERTAINED The opportunity was taken on Wednesday by residents of the Turakina Valley to say “au revoir” and convey best wishes to Major Roger Cameron. The gathering of over 45 residents was held at the home of Mrs. R. M. Baldwin. The large attendance, despite the inclement weather, was a tribute to the popularity of the guest of honour. Trump whist was played in the early part of the evening and before serving supper a community sing was led by Mr. Keith Reynolds. After supper a presentation of a leather writing case was made to Major Cameron by Mr. J. A. Harris, on behalf of the Valley residents. Mr. Harris referred to Major Camerson’s boyhood days and the high esteem in which he had always been held in the Valley. He paid an eloquent tribute to Major Cameron's sterling character and powers of leadership, and predicted that the same qualities would carry him far in his future career. Major Cameron thanked all present for the gathering and Ihe gift, and reminded them that the soldier did his duty gladly when he knew that those at home were doing their share. The opportunity was also taken by Mr. Harris of thanking the Valley residents on behalf of Miss Jean McGregor for a presentation which had been made to her on her departure overseas. Trooper A. W.
