MR. EDEN’S MISSION

CONFERENCE WITH LITVINOV Recd. 10 p.m. New York, March 16. The New York Times’ Washington correspondent says Mr. Anthony Eden’s scheduled conference with M. Litvinov, Soviet Ambassador, to-mor-row, will presumably provide an opportunity to describe his activities and impressions since his arrival, thus preventing any uncertainties arising in the minds of (he Russians concerning the objects of his mission. It is realised in Washington, from statements made in London on the eve of Mr. Eden’s departure, that Britain is definitely aligned with Russia in European affairs and is determined to abide by the spirit as well as the letter of the 20-year treaty of alliance. The statements have given rise to conjecture in diplomatic circles in Washington that one of the primary purposes of Mr. Eden’s visit was to explain this policy carefully to American officials and, furthermore, encourage the spirit of American acquiescence with it. The Russians, it is reported, wholeheartedly favour this.
