PATEA BOROUGH COUNCIL

LAST WEEK'S MEETING The Palea Borough Council met on Thursday, the ordinary meeting, which was to have been held on Monday, having lapsed for want of a quorum. Mr. F. Ramsbottom presided. The Patea County Council wrote agreeing to contribute the sum of £5 towards the cost of street lights in Portland Quay. In reply to the council's request that the county council appoint representatives on the local rehabilitation committee the county clerk wrote that in view of contusion existing about the correct constitution of such a committee the appointment or representatives would be deferred until the position was clarified. It was decided to renew the annual grant of £3O to the Patea Municipal Band, Cr. Fuller Sandys stating that It was a pity that such a desirable organisation should be allowed to drop out through lack of funds. It was aecided to adopt the suggestion of Cr. Fraser that the grant be conditional on the instruments being properly cared for and a report on the assets of the band being submitted to the ccuncil.

It was decided that the building inspector should report on the conflition ot the seats in the town hall and the extent of the repairs necessary, and that a similar report be furnished every quarter, including reference to whether all the terms of the lease of the hall are being observed by the picture company. The borough engineer, Mr. J. O. Cunningham, reported that after receiving a complaint that the water to tlie cemetery had been cut off, he had made investigations and had lound that the sto-p cock of the water supply to an adjacent trough used for cattle had been broken and the waler had run to waste, forming a duck pond. He had instructed the owner ot the trough to rectify the matter immediately. It was decided that in any cases of wilful waste of water the matter should be placed in the hands ot the borough solicitor to take action.
