PERSISTENT RUMOURS

Recd. 9.20 a.m. London. March 14. Rumours persist concerning Hitler, the latest of which is that he is suffering from a complete nervous breakdown, inflammation of the eyes and exhaustion.

The Bri.ish United Press correapondcNt on the German frontier quotes an informant recently in Munich, who mentioned rumours that Hitler, after the Stalingrad disaster, retired to Berchtesgaden and refused to see anyone except his servants. He spends the time brooding on military plans to avert further disaster. The same informant states that slogans, “Down with Hitler.” were scrawled on the walls of Munich after the latest R.A.F. raid. Goebbels, in an interview to-day with foreign newspapermen, ridiculed rumours of Hitler's illness, adding: "When I visited the Fuhrer's headquarters I was able to see how he is nearing the burden exceptionally and energetically."
