EXPORTS DOWN; IMPORTS UP. A substantial fall in exports and a sharp rise in imports are shown in the overeeaa trade figures for January, released yesterday by ths Customs Department. For the seven months of the production year both exports and imports show substantial increases. Exports during January totalled £3.899.000, compared with £5,267,000 In January, 1942, a decrease of £1,368,000. Imports for tha month were £7011.000, compared with £3,498,000 in January, 1942, an increase of £3,513,000. ieaving an unfavourable trade balance of 3,112,00(1, compared with a favourable balance of £1,769,000 in January, 1942. Export and import values for the past five years compare as follows:

For the first seven months of the production year, which opens on Juiy 1, exports were valued at £41,557,000, compared with £36,090,000 in the same period of the previous year, an increase of £5,467,000. Imports for tha same period totalled £36,412,000, compared with £30,608,000 in the previous season, an increase of £5,804,000. The favourable trade balance for the seven months amounted to £5,145,000, against £5,482,000, a decrease of £337,000.
