ARMED FORCES

MEDICAL EXAMINATIONS FINISHED NINETEENTH CALL-UP According to figures of medical board sittings the percentage of Grade 1 men from the Wanganui area drawn in the nineteenth call-up was lower than in previous ballots. This call-up was of men in the 4145 age group and about half those examined were Grade 1. The percentage was 40.86, and of the remainder 18.28 per cent, were Grade 2, 15.26 per cent. Grade 3, 2.36 per cent. Grade 4, and the balance of 23.2 per cent, were deferred. It is expected to be some weeks before the deferred men are finally graded. In all 465 men have been examined in a period of about five weeks in Wanganui, and examinations have been finished in Marton and Taihape, but are still proceeding in Palmerston North. The percentage of fit men is regarded as satisfactory by the Army authorities. In addition to the increase in age of the group many of those called were returned men from the last war.
