ADDRESS BY FOUNDER I There was a large attendance at the Sutcliffe School of Radiant on February 16, when Dr. Herbert Sutcliffe, founder and principal, was the guest lecturer. “Victory Over Sell was the title of his lecture, in which he told his audience that a balanced mentality is a psychological accomplishment. It may be sum totalled as a. balance of the main human urges of power and emotion. Such a balanced mentality brings in its train wise discernment, true evaluation, human understanding and self victory. Unfortunately, arrested development is more common, and the cause of more failure and disease than is generally recognised. If psychology has done nothing else, it has made one great contribution to human development. It has proved that physical age is not a proof of personal maturity. We may attain manhood or womanhood and live to a ripe age whilst remaining sub-normal, or even infantile in feeling and perception. Emotional outbursts and false opinions are closely associated with fixations of childhood. Psychology indicates the way to victory over our destructive thoughts and feelings. Inhibitions of the early years become the building ground of destructive mental weeds and poisons. Owing to ignorance we are prone to defend our resentments, hurts, slights, condemnations and self-pity. It !s another way of saying we desire to be childish when facing tests of personality./ Despondency, jealousy, vindictiveness and other mental ills can be overcome by a realisation that man has the power to rise above the soul destroying split-personality. Victory over self is greater than conquering a city.
