CAUSING ANXIETY

CONDITION OF GANDHI (Recd. 6.35 p.m.) Bombay, Feb. 17. Mahatma Gandhi’s general condition continues to cause anxiety, but he had a better day yesterday, states a medical bulletin. Two more doctors reached Poona to attend him. Sir H. P. Mody, Mr. N. R. Sarkar. and Mr. M. S. Aney, members of the Viceroy’s Executive Council, have resigned as a result of disagreement with the Government's decision not to free Mr. Gandhi. Mr. Mody is Member for Supply. Mr. Sarkar Minister of Education. Health and Lands, and Mr. Aney for Indians overseas. “India will never forgive the British if Mr. Gandhi is allowed to die by inches behind bars," declared Mr. D. M. Maitre, a Nationalist, in a speech in the Legislative Assembly, demanding his immediate and unconditional release.

Mr. Bannerjee. Nationalist, said the death of Mr. Gandhi in gaol would permanently estrange India and Britain. If he again caused trouble after his release he could be sent to gaol again.

Mr. Nawabazada Liaqyhat Alikhan, member of the Moslem League, said he sympathised with his Hindu colleagues in their distress, but regretted that the Moslem League was un-

able to support the move for Mr. Gandhi's unconditional release. Sir Henry Richardson, of the European gtoup, said the Government could no more submit to Mr. Gandhi’s fasting throat than it could submit, to the threat of violence.

Sir Reginald Maxwell, a Home member, said the Government earnestly hoped Mr. Gandhi would call off his fast if he found the ordeal beyond his strength.
