WARNING TO PARENTS

STRICT CONTROL OVER YOUNG GIRLS “Girls under the age of 16 should be kept under strict control by their parents and should not be allowed to wander about the streets,” said Mr. Justice Smith when sentencing a young man bi the Supreme Court, Wanganui, yesterday, for unlawful carnal knowledge.

Admitting prisoner to probation for two years, His Honour commented that the jury in the case had made a strong recommendation to mercy. No doubt the jury’s recommendation was based on the fact that the girl had lent herself to the occasion. She was therefore a contributing cause to the offence.

If parents failed to keep strict control over girls under the age of 16, the parents themselves were moral delinquents. His Honour added. “This girl,” he said, “did wander about the streets and placed herself in the way of accused and other boys, with the result we know.”
