The new season’s grape crop is reported to be disappointing, particularly in the Waikato, where the yield is only about 25 ner cent., due to dryness and humidity. The quality is also below last season’s. Elsewhere the climatic conditions have been more favourable, but picking presents a labour problem. Therefore vineyard owners are hoping for a fine spell for the next five weeks, when the bulk of the cron will be garnered. Mr. B. W. Lindeman, wine expert of the Department of Agriculture, states that new areas planted wine and table grapes, but they are not vet ready foi nicking. He estimated that, the production of wine, cider, and fruit wines throughout the Dominion this season at 240,000 gallons, similar tn last season, despite thn nf sugar.
