EDUCATION BOARD

OUTDOOR STAFF DEPLETED MANY IN THE ARMED FORCES. Personnel of the Wanganui Education Board’s outdoor stair in the armed forces total 19, leaving 21 workmen to carry on the work. This fact was revealed in a report presented at the monthly meeting of the board, held on Tuesday, by the architect, Mr. E. R. Hodge. "The board will appreciate the extent to which the impact of the war has affected many ot the country’s commercial and industrial interests and will realise how the ranks of the workers in these fields of activity have been depleted in order that New Zealand’s fighting efficiency might be strengthened,” he said. “While our educational system can be regarded as an essential civilian industry, and no less that part of the institution which takes care of the buildings and equipment, it too, has made its sacrifices. Older members of the staff who are beyond the age of military service will do the best they can to render the service expected from them, in order that the building department may play its part in the welfare of those dependent upon its service.

“All the workmen realise that they are working cogs in the wheel of the organisation and put forth their best effort in the service of the board. In view of the difficulties under which we work I know that the board will make allowances for any shortcomings that might be observed.”
