SUBMARINE HERO
DECORATED BY GENERAL MACARTHUR (Special Australian Corresßondent Sydney, Feb. 15. The award of’the American Distinguished Service Cross to Lieut.-Com-mander Dudley W. Morton, hero of the submarine attack on Japanese vessels at Wewak and in other northern New Guinea-'■waters last month, is announced from General MacArthur’s headquarters. Lieut.-Com-mander Morton was commander of the United States submarine Wahoo, which entered Wewak harbour on January 24 and sank an enemy destroyer. The submarine then attacked a convoy of four Japanese ships attempting to bring reinforcements to New Guinea. General MacArthur’s citation says: “By his courage and action, Lieut.Commander Morton destroyed completely every vessel of this convoy, which included two cargo ships, a tanker, and a troop transport. He thus contributed outstandingly to thesuccess of our operations in New Guinea.”
