STEPS FOR IMPROVEMENT. ♦ (P.A.) Auckland, Feb. 16, Certain steps to improve the Auck. land taxi service arc lo be announced in a few days as a result of a visit by . the Commissioner of Transport, Mr. G. Laurenson, who arrived from Welling’ .on to-day and held meetings with two of the three controlling bodies "It is obvious that the taxi situation in Auckland is in a thoroughly unsatisfactory state, and that the taxis are not giving a proper service to the public,'' said the Commissioner tonight. "A large proportion of theic time is taken up witn joy-riding and various other non-essential running,' ■vith the result that ordinary civilians are let! practically without a service.” "I have come to Auckland with instructions torn the Minister of Transport to take such steps as may be necessary to ensure a reasonable service.
