CHAIRMAN PERPLEXED

EDUCATION DEPARTMENT’S ACTION. “I am at a loss to understand the action of the Education Department in withdrawing its consent to the taking, under the Public Works Act, of an eighth of an acre of an education reserve fronting the main road as a site for the Patea School residence,” commented Mr. E. F. Hemingway, in his report tabled at yesterday’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board. “The site is an admirable one in every way and being part of a reserve set apart for education purposes, although leased, should have been procurable as a site for the head teacher’s residence. I would recommend that an explanation of the department’s action be pressed for as the land in question, although subdivided on the map into building sites of 1-8-acre, is being used only for grazing purposes and is not assisting in the progress of the town. The erection of a school residence on the site selected would not only solve the problem of a site for the Patea headmaster’s residence, but would be a decided benefit to the town.”
