UPHILL STRUGGLE

WANGANUI WAR SAVINGS SPIRITED DRIVE REQUIRED After the exceptional successes recorded at several offices in the Wanganui postal district over the past three weeks, National Savings investments suffered a serious setback last week. Only six offices succeeded in reaching their objectives, the lowest; number for some months. Of the successful offices, Aramoho, after a strenuous uphill struggle, and Waverley were the only offices to reach their goal without the assistance of a carry-over from the previous week.

“To give the campaign's effort renewed impetus throughout the district a spirited drive for investments in 3 per cent. War Bonds is required," said the district organiser, Mr. J. Gillick, last night. “As these easily negotiated securities, with a short currency of five years, constitute the best war-time investment available, they should appeal particularly to farmers, business firms and others with funds available for investment. With the assistance of £BBO in surpluses carried forward, the district receipts totalled £2953, a decrease of £769 for the week. A substantial decline of £1037 in actual cash receipts was a discouraging feature of the response recorded, the amount being £2072, compared with £3009 the previous week. In the Wanganui city area the cash receipts totalled £l4OO, also a decline of £379, but 'the substantial surplus available from the remarkable effort of the previous week ensured the maintenance of the city's record.”

The successful offices last week were: Hunterville 71, Aramoho 69, Marton 69, Wanganui 68 (all successive weeks), Waverley 42 weeks and Ohingaiti 40 weeks.
