INVALIDED SOLDIERS

RECEPTION BY MINISTER OF HEALTH

(P.A.) Wellington, Feb. 15. Speaking at a reception to invalided soldiers recently returned from the Middle East, the Minister of Health, the Hon. A. H. Nordmeyer, said: “Though you have been fighting thousands of miles away, you have done as much in defence of New Zealand as if you had been here fighting the Japanese, and the Government and people are deeply grateful to you. You belong to a division that has become known as one of the finest fighting divisions in the world. It is an accepted fact that it stopped Rommel getting into Cairo and the part it played will go down in history.” The Minister also welcomed a number of men who had served in the Merchant Navy. Among the returned soldiers is Sergt. R. M. Macfarlane, M.P., former Mayor of Christchurch.

Sugar and Stewed Fruit. Many people are finding the present sugar ration all too little to meet their summer needs. What was an adequate ration in the springtime is not considered by some so adequate for January, February and March, the reason being that as stewed fruit

has arrived on the daily menu, much more sugar is used than in those , months when fruit was not available. Even moderately ripe stone fruit, when stewed seems to develop an acidity that calls for a liberal helping of sugar, hence the extra drain ' on the rationed article. |
