MARTON RACES

TO-MORROW’S PROSPECTS Even fields are carded for the opening day of the Marton Jockey Club’s summer meeting, which will be held to-morrow and Saturday. A special train will leave Wanganui at 9.40 a.m. each day for Marton, where it is due I at 11.20 a.m.. in ample time for the first race at 12 noon. The return train leaves at 5.45 p.m. A special train will also leave Taihape at 8.40 a.m. each day, being due at Marton at 10.48 a.m. The musical programme will be given by the Queen Alexandra Military Band, Lieut. R. B. V. Thomas wielding the baton. The feature event to-morrow is the Marton Cup, the issue in which is made the more open because the dual Awapuni winner, Yogi, will be opposed by several horses that did not race against him at the Manawatu meeting. He has the steadier of 9.9, but with his trainer (B. H. Morris) in the saddle he should be well served. Centrepoise has been off the scene for a time but in the spring he won the Wellington Handicap. Caroline Bay is better known as a sprinter, but Amigo’s display at Awapuni suggests that he must be given a good chance. Sir Crusoe and Piastre may not appeal, but Classform would only need to be in the mood to run a slashing race under 7.5. Alethea, winner of the N.Z. Oaks, should appreciate her light impost and will be better suited than under her 9.6 in hack company at Awapuni. Of those on the minimum Gay Genet and High Class make most appeal. The sprint field is not so strong as that in the Marton Cup. but Koi Ragi should not be stopped by the rise in weight after his two fine displays at Awapuni. Caroline Bay. Black Robe and Indian Sign should be responsible for sound performances, and Autolite has a good deal of class in spite of the impost. The other races have filled well, and with win-and-place betting only fine weather is required ior another bumper totalisator turnover. The following appeal:— Maiden Race.—First Division: Quick Decision, Royal Counsellor. Second Division: Bal tie Zone, Foxada. Juvenile Handicap.—Virtuoso. Airlie, Financial. Aidworth Stakes.—Pompit, Lady Spiral. Flying Hawk Rata Hurdles.—Glaciate. Flying Spy, Colincamps. Marton Cup.—Yogi, High Class. Gay Genet. McManaway Memorial.-yKol Ragi, Black Robe, Caroline Bay.
