EASTERN WAR OUTLOOK
“ENCOURAGING,” SAYS MR. ROOSEVELT Washington, Dec. 28. President Roosevelt to-day conferred with Vice-Admiral Helfrich and told the Press that the eastern war outlook was encouraging, perhaps even favourable. Asked how soon Java might be retaken, Vice-Admiral Helfrich replied: “I would like to be optimistic, but I cannot. It will be a long, ' bitterstruggle, and the Japs will fight to the end.” Vice-Admiral Helfrich pointed out that units of the Dutch Navy and air i force are now operating under General MacArthur Vice-Admiral Helfrich is shortly going to Australia.
