STARVING JAPANESE

GUADALCANAR GARRISON’S PLIGHT (Recd. 11 p.m.) Washington, Dec. 29. Coastguard Commander Dwight Dexter, at the naval operating base at Guadalcanar until November 5, told a Press conference at the Navy Department that the Japanese on Guadalcanar were suffering severely from starvation and disease, besides “the little bit of Hell the Marines are giving them.” The Japanese were without fresh supplies for about six weeks. Disease and lack of proper medical facilities are playing havoc with the enemy. Marine patrols discovered scores of Japanese in bivouac areas who had apparently died from disease and malnutrition.
