MEN LIABLE FOR SERVICE
DIRECTED INTO FREEZING INDUSTRY. Certain men liable for immediate military service arc being directed into the freezing industry by the district manpower officer, Mr. J. H. Flowers, who is acting in accordance with instructions from the War Cabinet. In this way additional staff is being provided for freezing, works at Wanganui. Patea and Feilding. This policy has been adopted in an attempt to furnish the industry with sufficient labour to meet the demand of its peak killing period, which falls between January and March. The authorities consider that it is better to direct into the industry men in civilian life who are liable for immedaite military service, rather than withdraw men from the Army. Withdrawal of men from the Army, it is stated, causes disorganisation. Mr. Flowers said yesterday that the position in regard to labour at the Wanganui, Patea and Feilding works was very satisfactory. About 30 vacancies are to be filled and a selection of men likely to meet the requirements is being made. These men are given the option of taking up employment in the freezing works or going into the Army.
The placing of men in the freezing industry during the busy season means that their entry into ramp is postponed during that period only.
