LATE SHOPPING NIGHT TO-NIGHT HOLIDAY ARRANGEMENTS The late shopping night in Wang;» nui will be observed to-night, New Year’s Eve, when shops will remain open until 9 p.m. As in Christmas week, no bread will be baked to-mor-row or Saturday and it will be necessary for housewives to provide sufficient bread to last until Monday, when the shops will reopen. The same applies to meat. From 7.30 to 9 o’clock to-night the Wanganui Highland Pipe Band, under Drum-Major D. A. Almond and PipeMajor E. C. Morgan, will play selections at various points in Victoria Avenue. The band will play at the Druids’ Hall from 11.30 p.m., and at 11.55 p.m. will march to the Chief Post Office, where they will play the Old Year out and the New Year in. as has been the custom for years past. Given fine weather to-morrow, the first day of the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting should attract a large attendance from Wanganui and surrounding district, as also should Stratford. The up-river excursion to Hipango Park should attract Lberal patronage. Both Kai Iwi and Castlecliff beaches are sure to be popular with many city dwellers not fortunate enough to be away on holidav. Bowling clubs affiliated to the Wanganui Bowling Centre will hold cne-day tournaments. City and suburban picture theatres will * screen special holiday programmes.
