VICE-REGAL (P.A.) Timaru. Dec. 30. The Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, attended by Major C. J. Holland-Martin, left “RaincUff” this morning for North Canterbury. His Excellency will return to ‘'Raincliff'’ to-morrow evening. Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Johnson, of Wanganui, are visiting New Plymouth. Lieut. A. E. C. Bell, R.N.R., son of Mrs. R. Bell. Girls’ College, Liverpool Street, Wanganui, Is missing and presumed killed, according to the latest naval casualty list. Captain and Quartermaster T. J. Cronin, New Zealand Permanent Staff, who was invalided home from the Middle East late in 1941 and was later appointed to an Army school oi instruction, has been promoted to the rank of major and quartermaster. The Rev. V. C. Venimnre, vicar of St. Peter’s Church, Gonville, who is chaplain in an R.N.Z.A.F. station in the Auckland district, is visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. W. Venimore, Muir Street, Gonville. To-night (New Year’s Eve), Mr. Venimore will take the midnight Communion service in St. Peter's Church.

Mr. J. J. E. Downey, branch manager of the Bank of New Zealand al Wellsford, has been transierreu to Carterton, and his place has been taken by Mr. E. O. L. Rees, of Warkworth. Mr. F. H. Moss, of Inglewood, has been appointed manager of the Huntly branch, in place of Mr. E. V. Daldy, who has been transferred to Foxton. Mr. M. J. Daniel, manager at Petonc, will be manager of lhe Thames branch.

Sergeant Hedley Lawis (“Mick'') Geoflic, Second N.Z.E.F., who has Deen awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, although coining from Taradale, Hawke's Bay, was well known in Wanganui. He worked with his brother, Mr. J. Geoflic, as an employee of the Wanganui City Meat Co., and was one of tne foundation members of the Durie Hill Swimming Club, being a keen enthusiast in teacning swimming to children. Sergeant Geofflc is married and his wile lives in Napier. Mr. Jame s Moyes, whose death occurred last week, was a well-known resident of Timaru. Born in Scotland on November 29, 1881, Mr. Moyes came to New Zealand in 1906, and settled at Timaru. For 20 yea.s he was in business as a tailor, transferring his interests to real estate 16 years ago. A prominent Freemason, Mr. Moyes was a foundation member of Lodge Koranga, No. 197, of which he was a past master. He played a vital part in the building and administration of the Masonic Temple at Timaru. He is survived by his wife (Mrs. L. G. Moyes), and three sou... Mr. R. J. Moyes (Timaru), W.O. II D. W. Moyes, and Seaman Operator N A. Moyes (overseas). Mr. George Thomas Booth, a wellknown Christchurch business man who has been living in retirement, died this week, aged 84 years. He was born in Sunderland, England, and was managing director of Booth Macdonald, -and Co. from 1890 to 1925, and Mayor of Sydenham from 1890 to 1901. At about this time he was also president of the Canterbury Employers' Association. He was a past president of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce and the Employers’ Federation of New Zealand, and was a member of the Court of Arbitration in 1928 and 1929. -'-Press* Association.
