APPEAL FOR WOMEN

AUCKLAND COUNCIL’S DECISION. The Auckland City Council discussed the question whether appeals should be made for female members of the council's staff who might volunteer for service with the armed forces or who might be called up for civilian service elsewhere. It was decided to direct the town clerk to appeal in all cases where he deemed it advisable The Mayor. (Mr. J. A. C. Allum) said the town clerk had only one male staff member left, and other departments were in a very similar position. If experienced women were taken away the situation would become impossible. The authorities wished to enlist unattached women and not to move those who were in key or skilled positions.
