BRAVE OFFICERS
ENEMY GUNS SILENCED ’ London, Sept. 25. An Army major wno took orders from a junior oilicer during the lighting in the Western Desert has won the Military Cross. He is Major Parbrey. When British forces were battling then way out of Gazala three months ago Major Parbrey drove up to a subaltern in a gun carrier. The subaltern not recognising the major, ordered him to go out and silence a machine-gun nest which was holding up the advance of his platoon. The major obeyed the order without hesital on and when he returned the same subaltern orde eu kin out again to ilea, with another nachine-gun post. Once more the major obeyed, this time in the face cl heavy enemy artillery and machine-gun Lre. A list of military awards published to-nigLl includes the DistinguishedSeiVzCe Order to Captain D. J. Penwih. wi.o was commanding a company of liir- Last YorKhire Regiment during the break-out 1T) n south-east Mei-sa Matruh on June 11. _t was Captain P> nwill’s bravery aid leadership which was largely responsible lor forcing a gap wide ear ugh for the survivors of the battalion and the rest of the brigade, as well as divisional heaiKuarters, to get through.
