NEARLY WALKED INTO GERMAN HIDE-OUT
Australian Frontline H.Q., Aug. 16. A South’Australian patrol, moving forward in pitch dark, almost trod on a nest of Germans in no-man’s land. The leading scout was five yards from the clump of camel thorn in which the Germans were hidden when a second scout, 20 yards behind, gave the alarm. The patrol’s Bren gun 30 yards away and a tommy-gun less than 20 yards away, promptly opened fire. The Germans must have been riddled with lead. The enemy’s main body answered with grenades, but our patrol withdrew without trouble. The leading scout, who came face to face with the ambush, failed to return. Another man was slightly injured. During this patrol action Australian artillery harassed enemy positions. Belore dawn the South Africans joined in the barrage.
