BREN GUN CARRIERS

WARNING TO MOTORISTS | Dunedin, Sept. 23. An essential part of the training in the handling of Bren gun carriers includes driving on bitumen roads in the city and outlying districts. Where -these carriers may be encountered on any roads, motorists are warned to exercise every care, as control of the carriers cannot be 100 per cent, perfect. The chief traffic inspector, Mr. 'E. H. Barrett, was on Saturday taken on a tour of city streets in the leading carrier of a convoy, in order that he might have a practical illustration of the way in which these vehicles behave on a bitumen service. As the tractors of the carriers are smooth and of metal, they do not obtain a firm grip ufl the bitumen surface, and the carriers are, therefore, liable to! perform evolutions other than those, intended. After the trial, Mr. Barrett stated 'that the drivers had handled the vehicles admirably, but at one or two J corners some difficulty was experi- • .enced in making a right-angled turn.; In view of this tendency on the pari I of the carriers Mr. Barrett felt thati motorists should be warned to take* every precaution on any sector of! tarred roads where the Bren carriers; may be operating. On unsealed roads the same problems do not arise.
