OBITUARY

MR. IRWIN 1 ARIS. The death occurred suddenly in New Plymouth last week, of Mr. Irwin Faris. Mr. Faris spent his early boyhood in Charleston. After receiving his education at the Waitaki Boys’ High School, he joined the Railways Department, and in various capacities was stationed in different parts of New Zealand. He was on the audit inspecting staff of the department when he retired some years ago. On his retirement he settled in Inglewood with his son, a well-known Taranaki doctor. MRS. J. HANNAH. Mrs. J. Hannah, a resident of Woodville in its early days, died recently. Mrs. Hannah arrived in New Zealand with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maisey on February 12, 1875. After living lithe Napier district for about three years, she went to Woodville, where many years of her early life were spent. Afterward she went to Foxton, where she lived for over 40 years. She spent the last five years of her life in Palmerston North. MR. EWEN McGREGOK. Mr. Ewen McGregor, whose death occurred at Hamilton on Saturday, at the age of 81 years, was born at Matarawa, Wanganui. He was the filth son of Mr. Alexander McGregor, who had come from Inverness, Scotland, to New Zealand in 1851, and passed his childhood in the troublous times ol the Maori wars. When little more than a youth he, with his brothers, took up a large block of virgin country at Paraekaretu, in the Turakina Valley, where fie experienced the hardships and privations of the early settiers. Later he acquired a large block of virgin country in the Rangitikei, and for many years was a successful sawmiller and farmer there In 1908 he moved to the Waikato and took over the Rukuhia homestead block, which he farmed until his retirement some years ago. During his lifetime Mr. McGregor made many chartable gfts, one of the most notable beng a farm of 4000 acres at Putaruru, which he gave to the Salvation Army and which has since been used lor the training of boys as farmers. He is survived by his wife, one son, Major E. J. McGregor, and a daughter, Mrs. J. M. McWhannell. His younger son, the late SquadronLeader M C. McGregor, D.F.C. and bar. formerly of Palmerston North, rendered outstanding service in the Great War and was killed in a flying accident ip Wellington.
