THE EVILS OF WAR

ARCHBISHOP’S WARNING London, May 19. Addressing the Convocation of Synod, the Archibishop of Canterbury, Dr. Wm. Temple, said that recognition of the duty to engage in war must not obscure the other duty of recognising that war itself was hideous and evil, and that to engage in it involved great temptations. We needed to be vigilant against all tendency to generate hatred and ill will, as contrasted with resolute purpose and devotion to justice. From time to time Christian sentiment was profoundly shocked by the way the news was presented. When the R.A.F. lately did a signal service to the Allied cause by the destruction in great measure of the Baltic ports of Lubeck and Rostock this was presented in some quarters in a way to suggest that the destruction of historic buildings and t|ie infliction of misery on multitudes of human beings were occasions for satisfaction rather than profound regret. This was part of the price—a bitter price—paid for conspicuous aid to Russia through checking supplies to the German armies.
