OBITUARY

MK. J. W. CATO. The death has occurred at Hastings of Mr. James Watson Cato. At the tune of his death Mr. Cato was manager of the produce and seed department of the Hawke's Bay Farmers’ Co-operative Association, Limited. In his younger days Mr. Cato was prominent in rowing circles, and as a member of the Union Rowing Club, he took part as stroke in teams which won the Norton Fours Cup and many other trophies. He also won a number of trophies as a single sculler. MRS. HANNAH GARNETT. The death has occurred of Mrs Hannah Garnett, aged 85 years, a former mayoress of Hastings, I t the residence of her son, Mr. Albert Garnett, Havelock North. Mrs. Garnett was born in Kendal, Westmorland, England, in 1857, and with her husband came to New Zealand in 1884, landing at Lyttelton. Alter living at Addington for less than a year, she moved to Hastings, where she had since lived. Her husband, the late Mr. James Garnett, predeceased her 29 years ago. She is survived by two sons, Messrs. Albert Garnett, Havelock North, and Ernest Garnett, Hastings. Three other sons predeceased their mother about five years ago, all having died within 18 months of one another. MRS. A. F. STEVENSON. Recently at Palmerston North, the death occurred of Mrs. A. F. Stevenson, who was born in 1868 at Gladstone. She was the elder daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Grant, of "Bannockburn,” pioneer Wairarapa settlers who came to New Zealand in 1852-53 from Sutherlandshire, Scotland, and whose marriage was celebrated in the latter year at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Sutherland, Lyall Bay station. Mrs. Stevenson resided for many years in the Forty Mile Bush and Horowhenua districts. More recently she lived in Foxton and Woodville, but a few months ago Mr. and | Mrs. Stevenson purchased a residence at Terrace End, Palmerston North. Of historical interest is the fact that an aunt. Miss Selina MacDonald Sutherland, established the Masterton Hospital in 1877, was matron of the Wellington Hospital in 1879, and in 1881 founded the Sutherland Homes (for needy children) in Melbourne.
