SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Mrs. Len Irvine, of Te Awamutu, is visiting relatives in Wanganui. Miss Belsey, of Morrinsville, is visiting Wanganui and is the guest of Mrs. Notman. Gonville. Miss Gwitha Haggie has returned to Wanganui from Palmerston North. Mrs. S. A. Sheaves, Grey Street, is visiting Wellington. Mrs. Hume Strachan, who has been visiting Mrs. V. B. Haworth, St. John’s Hill, has returned to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs. F. J. Cameron, Wanganui, was a recent visitor to Hawera. Mr. and Mrs. Eric Irvine, of Nelson, who have been staying with the former’s parents in Gonville, have left for Wellington en route for the South Island. Mrs. H. C. Dow and her daughter, Dawn, Wanganui, are spending the school holidays in New Plymouth. Miss Ann Beck has returned to Wanganui from Ruatiti and has taken up residence at Harrison Street. A few months ago the Union of Jewish Women of New Zealand provided an ambulance for members of the Auxiliary Territorial Service in Palestine. Since then, the union has concentrated on equipping two ambulance trailers, which are now ready for use, and will be given to the Home Guard in New Zealand. Miss Rosina Buckman, the New Zealand singer who has been in England for the past 25 years has, on three occasions, been dispossessed oi her seaside homes in North Wales by the Government authorities, who required the properties for defence purposes. Her husband, Maurice d’Oisely, singer, teacher of vocalism, and an examiner for the Royal Academy of Music, is serving in the British Army. The full Executive Committee of the Senate of the University of NewZealand has now considered applications received for the British Research Council’s award to women for special research in Britain under war-time conditions, and has decided (says a Press Association telegram) that for the purposes of final selection the names oi the following three candidates will be forwarded to the British Council: Mrs. Doris Ivy Allen, M.H.Sc., University of Otago; Miss Anna Holmes Northcroft, B.Arch., A.N.Z.1.A., Auckland University College; Miss Ailsa Margaret Blakey, M.A., Auckland University College.

Series of Lectures During the month of June a series of lectures on “Child Study” will be given under the auspices of the Y.M.C.A.-Y.W.C.A. The first talk, “The Pre-School Child,” will be given by Mrs. R. N. Wilson. The second address, to be given by Mrs. K. H. O’Halloran, will be entitled “Significance of Play,” and the third lecture, “Child’s Emotional Life,” by Mrs. A. Douglass. For the final talk, Miss N. Sampson will speak on “The Question of Discipline.” Girls’ Part in Defence According to a message from overseas, eight girls helped to destroy one of the German raiders which attacked the English health resort, Bath. On the day of the raid, the girls, of the A.T. Service, were attacned to the heavy battery on the outskirts of Bristol. the first of several raiders came over, the girls, working predictors and range-finders, passed on vital information to the men, and shells screamed up, followed by a glow in the sky. Army Relations Committee Meet Members of the newly-formed Army Relations Committee held their first meeting on Monday at the home of Mrs. J. T. Deere, Plymouth Street. The president, Mrs. H. G. Horsley, presided. Much enthusiasm was shown in the forming of plans to raise money for men of the Army serving overseas. All members of the committee are next-of-kin. The first effort to raise funds will be a bridge party on the first Saturday in June, arranged by Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Beauchamp, whose son John is serving overseas. The first meeting of the organisation will be neld on the first Monday in June, the place and time to be announced later. AU interested are invited to attend and join the association.
