APPOINTED COMMANDER IN MEDITERRANEAN ADMIRAL HARWOOD’S POST London, May 18. The Admiralty announces that Rear-Admiral Sir Henry Harwood, who has had long and distinguished service in the Navy, and last October became Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff, has been appointed Commander-in-Chief, the Mediterranean, with the acting rank of admiral. He has arrived in Alexandria. Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, whom he succeeds, will head the British Admiralty delegation in Washington, vice Admiral Sir Charles Little, who has been appointed Com-mander-in-Chief at Ponsmouth. Rear-Admiral Henry B. Rawlings has relieved Rear-Admiral Harwood as an assistant chief of the Naval Stall. Rear-Admiral Eric J. P. Brind will shortly relieve Rear-Admiral Arthur J. Power as an assistant chief of the Naval Staff. Rear-Admiral Power has been selected lor a sea-going appointment. Admiral Sir Henry Harwood is 54 years of age, and has been in the naval service since 1904, when he joined H.M.S. Britannia as a midshipman. He won gradual promotion until in 1929 he was given the command of the 9th Destroyer Division and later, in 1936, the command of the South American Division. He won promotion to Rear-Admiral, and was made K. as a result of his direction of the River Plate action against the Graf Spec in December, 1939.
