GALLANT LEADERSHIP
' RARE DECORATION AWARDED Rugby, May 16. The first award during the present > war of the Indian Order of Merit. First Class, is announced. The Order . ranks second only to the V.C. in mili- - tary decorations for gallantry. The I recipient is Buadar Niaz Ali Khan, of i the 6th Rajputana Rifles, who was decorated for bravery al Sidi Barrani in i 1940 and is now at an officers' training ) school. During in Syria last sumr mer. he took over the command of his company when the company eom- - mander became a casualty and led it r with great skill during a long night - march to Mezze. Just before dawn, the company went ' round a village to cut the DamascusBeirut road and railway. There it destroyed several lorries, blew up the railway bridge, destroyed a dump turned back several convoys, and beat off an attack by a whole battalion. There are onlv 20 living holders of the Thirst. Class Indian Order of Merit. —8.0.W.
