SHIPBUILDING IN U.S.A. MOUNTING PRODUCTION (Reed. 7.5 p.m.) Rugby, May 17. The United States Navy Department disclosed that 154 tankers and merchantmen have been sunk or damaged in the Pacific and the Atlantic, the Caribbean Sea, the Gulf of Mexico and African waters since December 7. Oi these 92 were United States ships sunk by U-boats. On the other hand 36 ships were delivered and 51 were launched during April. During the four months ending April 106 ships were completed and placed in the war service. Thus United States production alone already more than offsets Allied losses. By midsummer the United States will be turning out two ships daily.—B.O.W. TWO MERCHANTMEN SUNK (Recd. 11 p.m.) Washington, May 18. The Navy Department announced that a small United States merchantman and a medium-sized British merchantman were torpedoed in the Caribbean area. Survivors who landed at Key West, Florida, declared a submarine bearing Italian markings sank both ships. | Twenty-two are believed to have i been lost aboard the British vessel, j The entire crew of the American vessel were rescued.
