PILLAGED CARGOES

COMPLAINTS AT SYDNEY (Recd. 11.45 p.m.) Sydney, May 18. Increased pillaging on Sydney's wharves has caused shipping companies to ask for heavily increased police supervision in the past nine months. It was stated in Court that £68.000 worth of goods were pillaged recently. After a cargo of 3500 tons from overseas was landed, claims for pillage totalled £5OOO. Shipping companies state that it is almost impossible to land intact commodities in short supply, such as tea. cigarettes and razor blades. Fourteen wharf labourers have been fined from £l5 to £2O in default 30 to 40 days’ imprisonment, for having stolen goods on wharves.
