e ) LOADING OF SHIPS IN AUSTRALIA Canberra, May 14. Mr. Curtin stated in the House of Representatives that militiamen are being used to load and unload e ships in Australia. He said that any class of labour under Government control would be used on the wharves to prevent flipping holdups. The Prime Minister was replying tc a protest by a Victorian Labour rn»mher, Mr. Calwell, against the use ol 1200 miitiamen as wharf labourers s Mr. Calwell said the men used on the > wharves had volunteered to light, bul t had been compulsorily transferred 1c r clock units. Members of labour units ? were getting award rates, but soldiers - received only 6s a day. I “I am not going to have ships lying • idle at the wharves for d'ays on end when they are urgently needed on the t high seas.” said Mr. Curtin. ‘‘The Gov- - ernment had no desire to use military s labour where civilian labour is avail--1 able. There hbve been no protests . from the trade unions, which recogJ nised that the use of the men was inevitable."
