“ONWARD ” NEW ZEALAND’S MOTTO WAR AND THE FUTURE [ When New Zealand's national em -' blem was designed, our forefathers] 1 embodied a simple motto—the word “Onward.” It is a motto that will never become out-of-date. In a very real sense the Empires’ goal in this war is Onward. The Nazi ideal of the glory of war is a backward and barbarian goal; lhe British aim is a future of freedom and justice for all. On the question of war-aims, an English writer has said: “To struggle! for life alone may be to lose everything that makes life worthwhile. But! to light for a way of living that is] more kindly and that is more merciful I and more tender is the only reason] why this war can be justified.” New Zealand is \*n the war heart and soul; our people believe in freedom I and in fighting for a more kindly way | of life. But freedom brings respon-: sibility, such as the need for modera- ’ tion and self-discipline in behaviour! and in our relations with our j men. "Hold fast to liberty’ ’is a phrase i that finds instant response among all Britishers. The liberty to drink what [ we wish and to enjoy friendly con-1 tacts and relaxation, is something' precious to a majority of our people ' Do not abuse that Liberty—be reason able, be moderate.
