INCREASED STIPENDS AUCKLAND REPORT (P.A.) Auckland, May 15. Interviewed with reference to the i Bishop of Waikato, Rt. Rev. C. A. Chernngton's statement in New Ply-| mouth that the stipend of £3OO yearly, for a vicar with a wife and family was! disgraceful, lhe Bishop of Auckland.l Rt. Rev. W. J. Simkin, said that in the Auckland diocese stipends of many oi the vicars had been increased in the past year as a result of the Synod’si resolution raising the statutory mini-1 mum by 10 per cent, from £3OO to £350 for parochial districts and from £350 to £358 for parishes. “The greatest difficulty is in the country where travelling expenses are heavy, in some instances £lOO yearly or more,” said the Bishop. Inquiries at the diocesan office revealed that in 28 out of 50 parishes and parochial districts increases of 10 per cent, or less have been made in the! vicars’ stipends and it is expeded'i similar action will be taken in other districts in the near future.
