MARTON NOTES

SUPPLY OF VEGETABLES PROPOSALS DISCUSSED The question of the vegetable shortage was discussed at the fortnightly meeting of the Marton W.W.S.A. Committee. The committee decided that the time had come* when it should take action about cultivating some of the vacant land about Marton. This matter was discussed and subsequently dropped last year, but the position is becoming more acute and it is considered that any vegetables that can be grown will be of the utmost value to hospitals or soldiers’ clubs, and will help to relieve the general pressure on supplies. The use of a section is to be obtained immediately and the soil will be prepared and planted as soon as possible. WOMEN’S WAR SERVICE AUXILIARY ’AI the fortnightly meeting of the W.W.S.A. Committee Mrs. J. Fisher presided and other members present were Mesdames Duncan Simpson, A. H. Watts, T. E. Barton. J. Caithness and J. F. R. Wallace. The resignation of Mrs. J. R. L. Stanford, who resigned owing to the pressure of other activities, was accepted with regret. Mrs. Caithness, leader of the Transport Unit, reported that a mechanics’ class for new members had now been started. She also stated that all transport candidates in the recent first aid examinations had been successful. All members are now equipped with first aid satchels and a kit inspection at the last drill parade had shown that the contents of the satchels were complete and in excellent order. The auxiliary is now being called on from time to time to supply transport workers in an emergency caused by men entering the forces, and the W.W.S.A. training has proved to be extremly satisfactory for this work.
