LIMIT ON LAUNDRY
INDUSTRY RATIONALISED IN AUSTRALIA (Special Aus. Correspondent N.Z.P-.A.) Sydney, May 14. The heavy man-power drive for war purposes and the rationalisation ot industry are having a widespread effect in Australia as the country becomes geared to greater military industrial effort. The latest industry to be rationalised is laundrying, which in New South Wales alone has 300 b employees. The laundering of luxury classes of goods will be abolished. Australia will have no more boileu shirts or stiff collars for the duration of the war; and blouses, skirts, playsuits, linen suits, trousers (except military and working) and frocks other than those used in business will come under the ban. Bagwash, semi-finish-ed, and “thrifty” services will also be dispensed with, if the recommendations made by members of the trade and by the Minister of War Organisation of Industry are adopted. The launderers have agreed to provide only on standard service. Like bread, milk, and meat, laundering is expected to be zoned so that delivery services may be cut to the minimum. Despite considerable complaint, the Australian cities now seem to be settling down to the restricted and zoned delivery services. The latest complaint comes from Sydney milkcart horses themse’ves. Most of them have been moved from their old beats, and when left unattended in unaccustomed streets they show a marked tendency to return to their familiar routes, and delivery schedules have been upset. Though the beer, cigarette, and razor blade shortage has yielded pride of place in the news to the panic shopping rush, it continues to be mentioned in all newspapers. Unlike the shops, which close when the quota of rationed goods is sold, hotel bars are now compelled to remain open after their beer is exhausted, as no restrie-' lotions have yet been placed on the pro-1 duction and sales of wines and spirits.
