VICHY NOTE TO U.S.A.
MARTINIQUE SITUATION • (Rec.l. 9.20 p.m.» London, May 14. It is learned that the French Note to the United States agrees to immobilise the three French warships at Martinique but rejects the demand for the delivery of tankers and other mer- } chantmen io the Allies. It accepts the ■ principle of negotiating a new statute ■ for the Antilles through normal \ diplomatic channels. An earlier Vichy communique stated that the United States Note of May 10 made demands regarding the Anti’’".. necessitating grave decisions by Government. Laval replied to the United States to-day. FORBIDDEN BY GERMANS London. May 13. The British United Press Vichy cors respondent says the Germans have forbidden trie Vichy authorities to hand i over their shipping at Martinique to the United States and has ordered • them to scuttle the ships it necessary.
