LIQUOR TRADE
STEPS FOR CONTROL REGULATIONS IN HAND Auckland, May 14. ’ An assurance from the Prime Minister (Mr. P. Fraser) that the Government is taking further steps for the control of the liquor trade, was received yesterday by the Rev. J. D. Smith, moderator of the Auckland . Presbytery. At the presbytery meeting on Tuesday night, Mr. Smith said the Prime Minister had not fulfilled the promises given after representations were made to him by the heads of the churches. Mr. Smith stated yesterday that the Prime Minister had telephoned to him saying that the Government was proposing to carry out by regulation the promises made and that two Ministers, Mr. Norclmeyer and Mr. Mason, were now framing regulations which would be in operation shortly. He did not know exactly what the regulations would cover, added Mr. Smith, but thought they would deal with afterhour trading and the excessive consumption of liquor. The Prime Minister had been anxious that the impression should be removed that the Government had done all it intended in the recent session of Parliament. ! ■
