j GERMAN SHIP INTERNED Montevideo, March 18. ; The Uruguayan Government seized i and interned the German ship Tacoma I (8200 tons) in reprisal for the torpedoing of a Uruguayan merchantman off Haiti. The Tacoma was a supply ship for the German battleship Graf Spee, which was scuttled after the Battle of the River Plate. Heavy police guards were placed at the German Legation following studen riots occasioned by the sinking of the merchantman. Several youths were injured during dispersal of the crowds by police wielding sticks. CHILEAN DEMONSTRATION Santiago, March 18. Students smashed the windows of Axis-owned, shops as a protest for the torpeoding of a Chilean freighter off the United States coast. Youths shouted for an immediate diplomatic break. Fifteen demonstrators were arrested. A Government spokesman indicated that the sinking of the ship does not affect Chile’s relations with Germany at present.
