CAPT. JAMES WHITE DEAD A veteran mariner and former harbourmaster at Wanganui. Captain James White, died at his home, 223 Guyton Street, yesterday, aged 74. He had been in poor health for the pas 1 two or three years but was stiil active and as recently as last Saturday played bowls. . Born in Timaru, he was a son of Alexander White, well-known shipowner of that port. He went to sea as a youth and before taking command of vessels in the intercolonial trade saw service in several foreign-going ships, which took him to many parts of the world. In the earlier part of the present century he joined Messrs'. A. Hatrick and Co., Ltd., Wanganui, as master, and was in command of the barquentines St. Ki Ida. Wanganui (formerly (he Carla) and Alexa, respectively. These vessels were engaged regularly in the intercolonial trade between Wanganui Sydney and Newcastle. About 1916 Captain White retired from the sea and took up a shore appointment as assistant-harbour-master, Wanganui, succeeding Captain P. Mclntyre as harbourmaster about 1929. Captain Mclntyre died within a comparatively short time of his retirement. Nine years ago Captain White retired from the staff of the Wanganui Harbour Board on superannuation, but still took an active interest in the port. In May, 1935, he was elected to the hoard as a member. He contested his seat at the 1938 elections but was defeated. While on (he Harbour Board staff, Captain While took a leading part, in the affairs of the Castlecliff Bowling Club. He retained an interest in the sport (ill the time of his death and was a member of the Wanganui Bowling Club. Captain White was a member of the Masonic lodges Moutoa and Royal Arch, Wanganui.
