THE TURF

ON AWAPUNI TRACKS PREPARATIONS FOR MARTON Horses engaged at the Manawatu meeting on Saturday were given their semi-final gallops under perfect conditions at Awapuni on Tuesday morning. The fast work on the course proper was against the rails. The plough, where Old Bill worked, was slow. Old Bill is not racing at Marton on Saturday. There were no outstanding gallops, but horses which went really well included Kanui te Pai. Rink, Gold Bridge. Blue Border, Leisurely and Kahuranaki. Premature, looking none the worse for her chase in the Thompson, was exercised. Old Bill (Miss Stephanie Boyd) worked twice round on the plough, being speeded up for the last halfmil? in 54 3-ssec. Wings of Song (D. W. Redstone) travelled fast for the first three of six on the plough, reaching the three in better than 39sec., but he was slowing up towards the finish, taking 1.20 2-5 for the full distance. Hanover (P. Brady). Segra (S. Waddell) and Miss Leighon (F. Buchanan) were others to work on the plough. Hanover’s task was strong pace work and he took some pulling up. Segra broke 1.40 for seven and Miss Leighon sprinted six In 1.23. Cartoonist was another to travel fast on the plough and he came home the last five in 1.11 1-5 working well. Fox Cover and Etruscan ran five in 1.7, which was not bad. On the Course Proper. Gold Bridge (H. P. Stewart) sprinted seven with Full Light (C. A. Bowry) and he was travelling well within himself at the post after running the last six in 1.19. Rink and Myarion broke 40sec. for the last three of six run in 1.10 3-5, and Rink is improving. Courting (J. Bowness) travelled at an even pace over seven, finishing strongly to complete in 1.33 4-5. Biue Border galloped a mile and he came home brilliantly in 39sec. to cover the full distance in 1.40. Kanui te Pai (Gill) was away ahead of Pastmaster (Redstone), but he was steadied and they came home together in 1.33, which was an attractive effort. Colincamps (N. McKinnon) ran the last six of his task in better than 1.20, finishing strongly. Kahuranaki’s companion over six was Devoted, but Devoted’s saddle slipped and he was. pulled up a few yards from the post. Kahuranaki worked like a seasoned horse and he was travelling very strongly at the finish. He broke 40sec. for the last three and completed the six in 1.20 Leisurely (A. G. Waddell) and Lady Virginia (light boy) were together at the end of five run in 1.5 3-5; Rickie (S. Anderson) and Deflation (Bowness) took 1.7; Sandy Bay (Slewart) and Sea Quex (Gill) just broke 1.6: Lady Spiral (Stewart) took 1.7 3-5; and Sir Bradbury (Stewart) and Pilot Bay (McKinnon) were under a hold and not troubled to run 1.10. Namesake (Watson). Irish Fox (R. B. Ireland) and Thumbs Up (Bowry) sprinted four in 51 4-ssec., finishing together. On the plough Ara (A. G. Waddell) and Alchemv (Buchanan) _ I ravelled well over five in 1.7: Parish Queen , ran seven in 1.35: and To Pourohe ' and a Tidal filly four in 54 3-ssec. j Riding engagements for Saturday have been announced as under: — H.
