MARTON NOTES

SIXTY-SIX YEARS AGO CELEBRATED BY MARTON RESIDENTS. Sixty-six years ago yesterday the sailing ship Persachore arrived in Wellington with passengers from the United Kingdom. Incuded in the list were Messrs. 11. C. Gronn, M. Christensen and R. Forster, all of whom are now residents at Marton Junction. Mr. Gronn came direct to Marton on his arrival, and has been a resident of Marton Junction ever since. He is a “gold star” member and ex-captain of tne Marton Volunteer Fire Brigade. A former chairman of the Marton Junction School Committee, he is also treasurer of the Ancient Order oi Foresters. For a number of yeaio conducted a wood and coal business at Marron Junction until his retirement at “Hawkestone,” Marton Junction. Mr. M. Christensen in the early days was foreman carpenter for the late Mr. James McChesney. A number of the old homesteads i.i the Rangitikei district are a testimony to nis ability as a carpenter and cabinetmaker. Mr. R. Forster has been a resident of Bulls and Marton since nis arrival in the Rangitikei district. Yesterday the three shipmates assembled at Mr. Gronn’s residence, where they celebrated the occasion, and many were the interesting anecdotes recorded of their early days’ experiences.

OBSTRUCTING A PUBLIC PLACE. At the Magistrate’s Court at Marton on Wednesday, before Mr. A. S. Coleman, S.M., on the information of the traffic inspector, Mr. M. J. Hartigan, Eric Hugh Souter, of Levin, was charged with obstructing a public place on a bend on the main highway near the Trentham Racecourse on a race day. A plea of guilty was entered and defendant was convicted and lined £2 10s and costs 12s. A.N.A. CLUB DANCE. Mrs. Cowper, of Marton, has received an appreciative letter from Miss Ruby Gillies, secretary of Palmerston North A.N.A. Club, thanking her for the hampers of goods which were sent over for their birthday party dance on Saturday. There were about 650 present, and the home-made cakes, etc., were very much appreciated. Miss Gillies wrote. “Please convey our thanks to your committee as these gilts from the country people are very helpful, and we hope that we will continue to receive your support in the future.” RANGITIKEI EVACUATION SCHEME. Residents of the Porewa Riding of the Rangitikei County are invited to attend a meeting in the Rangitikei County Council Chambers to-morrow, (Friday), at 7 p.m. to discuss an evacuation scheme for the district. Ladies and E.P.S. men are specially invited to attend. Mr. A. S. Coleman, councillor for the riding, will address the meeting. THE FOOTBALL SEASON. The annual general meeting of the Rangitikei Rugby Sub-union will be held in the Marton Jockey Club rooms on Monday, March 30, 1942, at 8 p.m., when the annual report will be presented, and the election of officers will lake place. THE PANTOMLME “ALADDIN.” Appreciative audiences greeted the performers in J. C. Williamsons’ pantomime “Aladdin” and his wonderful lamp with the Great Levante as Abanazar at the matinee and evening session at the Civic Theatre, Marton, on Tuesday. AN EN JOY ABLE PICNIC The Rata branch of Iho Returned •Services’ Association hold their annual picnic on Ihe Kata fool ball ground on Sunday, March 8. in lovely weather, t here was an excellent attendance of Iho public, who came from all parts of the district. Rongonui. BI RT HDA V CELEBRA TION A pleasant afternoon was spent recently when relatives and friends gathered to celebrate the 93rd. birthday of Mr. M. Marr. Mrs. R. Whale, his grand-daughter, was the hostess. Mr. Marr cut the prettily-decorated cake, on which were 93 candles. Except for failing eyesight, Mr. Marr enjoys very good health.
