FIRM ON LAST WEEK

WANGANUI SHEEP VALUES Prices generally were firm on last week when Freeman R. Jackson anrj Co., Ltd., yarded 3500 sheep, io a good attendance of buyers, at their weekly Wanganui sale yesterday. Cattle yarded totalled 320, but there was nothing really prime in the lat pens, sales being at relative values with last week. Store cattle had a dull sale, with many passings, but a good orecentage was placed privately. Vealers had a heavy entry of 80 head. All well-bred steers were bough* by graziers. A fair proportion were hard done and sold at low figures. Pigs were on a par with last week, except breeding sows, which sold at very low figures. Christchurch. March 18. At the Addington market the yarding to-day was easily the biggest of the season, the penning of store sheep altogether totalling more than 26 000. For store lambs, two-tooth ewes and old ewes particularly the sale was both sound and vigorous, old ewe values going up on last week’s rates by Is 6d per head. Fat sheen showed little change but fat cattle were irregular. The store lamb entry was 4146, against 6300 at last sale. The demand vas keen, with an all-round increase in price of Is a head. Top price of 24s Id was for a pen of Romney ewes.

Tops of the market ranged from 19s 3d to 21s; medium to good, 16s to 18»; culls, 10s to 12s. There were no passings. Store Sheep.—The entry was one of the biggest of the season, aggregating 412 two-tooths and about 15,000 older sheep, the heavy entry being a reflex of the firming rates at the ewe fairs for all classes of ewes. Top price for strong-woolled was 39s 6d and many other pens topped the 31s mark. The best halfbred price wa» 32s 6d. others making 28s tc 30.-> Good average ranged from 25s tot 27s 6d. For four-year-olds strong wools made to 26s and halfbreds to 225: sound and failing-mouthed ranged from 14s to 17s. The sale maintained the good rates which were comparable with those at the recent fairs until the last dozen pens were sold, when there was a slight easing. The fat lamb entry was about 3000 head. The rise of one-eighth of a penny in the export schedule did not affect the market to any extent. Top price was secured for a pen of 24, which made from 32s 2d to 34s lOd Freezing sorts ranged from 23s to 265. Butchers’ lambs were in keen demand at 27s 6d to 29s 6d. Fat Sheep.—The entry of 5000 compared with 3750. The quality was good and prices showed little variation on last week. There was a big proportion of ew es. The schedule to? wethers was up by one-eighth of a penny but the market was not afiected. Extra prime wethers made to 31s 3d; prime medium to prime, 25s 3d to 30s; light and ordinary, to 255. Extra good ewes sold to*27s; prime, to 20s; ordinary, to 16s 6d, anci export up to 14s. Fat cattie numbered 575 head, against 540 a week ago. The market developed an easing after a firm opening and on an average most classes of steer beef over the latter half ol the sale were down by 20s and secondary cows by 15s. Extra good beet over the whole of the sale averaged to 42s per lOOlbs., with a few pens slightly more. Medium to good made 37s to 39s per lOOlbs.; ordinary, to 35s 6d.
