LATE SHOPPING NIGHT

RETENTION OR ABOLITION IN WELLINGTON (P.A.) Wellington. March 18. Definite directions from the War Cabinet concerning the retention or abolition of the late shopping night in Wellington are to be sought by the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and in the' event of curtailment, from the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple. This action follows a discussion today between a City Council sub-com-mittee and retailers' representatives. The Mayor was asked to convey to the Minister the strong disapproval of any suggestion that, in the event of curtailment of the late night, suitable compensatory shopping hours should not be afforded the public earlier. Referring to hours in the morning as a remedy these were considered useless. and the opinion was fairly general. Auckland had been too precipitate in reaching the decisions it did. Amended daylight saving hours wore suggested as a suitable way of adjusting the position.
