TOUGH PROPOSITION
IF ENEMY ATTACKS SOUTH AFRICA London, March 17. Speaking in the Senate at Capetown to-day, General Smuts, the South African Prime Minister, said that if an enemy came to South Africa he would be up against a pretty tough proposition. He gave a warning that South Africa should be prepared for raiders, and said that everything possible was being done to see that the enemy got the reception he deserved. He paid a tribute to the two divisions in North Africa, and said that within the Union there was already one complete division, and that a second division could be supplied at short notice. There were large forces in reserve. Speaking of production, he said that heavy artillery and armoured cars were being exported from South Africa on a big scale.
