The constant drone of planes and arrival of Indian and British troops, new anti-aircraft measures and the evacuation of civilians from “clanger areas * are reminders to the Cingalese thaT they may soon be in the front line. Indian troops began arriving in November, and thereafter Indian and British units arrived at intervals. Coni siderable additions to Ceylon’s defensive equipment also arrived. Troops were stationed at strategic points throughout the island. Civil defence measures are considerable and a partial blackout is now enforced nightly. Many civilians have already been evacuated from the danger zones. Colombo is criss-crossed with air-raid trenches, and other precautionary measures, such as the construction of irid shelters, have been carried out. The control of rice and some other foodstuffs is already operating.
