Blackout Time. The time for the drawing of blinds in Wanganui to-day is 7 p.m. Demand for Fruit. Good Ones of peaches and tomatoes met a keen demand at city auction marts yesterday. Peaches brought 7s to 8s a bushel case, tomatoes 5s a 121 b case while coking apples sold for 6s a bushel case and dessert apples 8s a bushel case. Fire Brigade Display A feature of the F ire Brigade demonstration at Cook’s Gardens this afternoon will be the extinguishing of incendiary bombs. Later, at the Town Wharf, there will be a pumping display by five fire engines with ten powerful jets. Hospital Church Service. A service is to be held at the Wanganui Public Hospital to-morrow by the Rev. Nigel Williams, M.A., of the Wanganui Collegiate School. Anglican hospital chaplain, assisted by Chap- | lain W. Fraser, Maori hospital chap- I lain, representing the natives. During the service Chaplain Fraser will | sing a solo in Maori. Inter-house Rowing For several weeks crews from the Wanganui Collegiate School, who arc taking part in the annual inter-house fours, have been training assiduously on the river each afternoon. Medical Section have been busily engaged during! the past few days in collecting iron! hospital beds and other equipment needed for casually clearing stations established in the city and suburbs. Turakina E.P.S. Residents of Turakina and Wangaehu districts turned out in force on Wednesday night to a meeting in the Turakina Town Hall, to consider the question of evacuation in an emergency crisis. The chairman, Mr. G. e. Marshall, coum illor for the Otakapu Riding, presided, and explained the , procedure of the evacuation scheme that had been formulated, which met with the approval of those present. Mr. Marshall was appointed chief : warden, with power to appoint wardens for all parts of Turakina and Wangaehu. Thanks for assistance were accorded to Crs. J. Brice and A. S. Coleman. Headlight Masks. It docs not appear to be generally known that motorists are required to carry headlight masks in their cars for use in case of an emergency. Last night a suburban constable took a check on over 50 motor vehicles and not one was provided with the necessary equipment. In fact the majority of drivers did not seem to understand what the constable was talking about when apprehended. The regulations state: “Vehicles, during the period of emergency, may use lamps not exceeding seven watts, provided that the aperture through which the light is emitted is obscured by covering the whole of the aperture with paper or other material equal to two thicknesses of paper (not wetJ. and no light shall be displayed while the vehicle is pa?ked.”
